Nylon Thread Buying Guide
When choosing the right thread, the most important factors include the application, the size (or thickness), the color and the spool size. Nylon properties which include it being strong, inexpensive, easy to sew, and a glossy finish can make it a very desirable type of thread in applications such as upholstery, pet applications, automotive interiors, briefcases, etc.
There are several applications in which nylon thread is not preferred such as any application with prolonged exposure to sunlight, any garments that require fire retardancy, and any critically strong requirements. The following characteristics should also be considered when choosing nylon thread.
Thread Size
When thread size increases, the following characteristics increase as well :
• Needle Size
• Stitch Visibility • Strength • Sewing Machine Size • Thread Diameter • Sewing Heat and Friction |
Regular or Bonded :
Bonded thread has a coating that reduces needle heat and fraying. The bonding agent makes thread stiffer and about 5% thicker than regular thread without a coating. Deciding between regular and bonded greatly depends on the application and thread thickness.
Amount of Thread :
Because the number of yards per pound decreases as thread thickness increases, polyester thread is sold by weight (ounces or pounds) and not yards. The stated weight can vary ± 10% from the normal stated weight.
Elongation :
Standard polyester thread will stretch approximately 25% before it will break. Stretchiness is desirable in most applications because it allows the seams to expand and contract with the material which allows for less puckering and breakage.
Twist :
The most popular is the left twist, which is also referred to as a Z-Twist, because it is what most single-needle machines in the U.S. require. The right twist, or S-Twist, is used in double-needle machines.
